Blues Take Round 1

Blues 4, Blue Jackets 1

It was a physical affair in the Scottrade Center, but with the gloves on, St. Louis prevailed with a 4-1 victory against the Blue Jackets.
Ten power plays and 58 penalty minutes told the story of the showdown between the Central Division rivals. From the puck drop to the final horn, the teams tangled as much between the whistles as they did after them.
Two minutes into the game, Darryl Boyce and Chris Porter fought to set the tone for the game. Unbeknownst to the players, the tilt embodied the remainder of the contest. Similar to Byers’ scrap, Columbus started strong, but quickly faltered.
At 6:01 of the first period, the Blues claimed the night’s first goal when David Perron capitalized on a pass in the slot from winger Andy McDonald.
St. Louis failed to convert on three power play opportunities in the opening frame, giving the Blue Jackets a break early in the game. However, the next two periods did not bring the same fortune to Columbus’ penalty killers.
Cam Atkinson tied the game at 1-1 early in the second frame, but his tally was made irrelevant as the Blues scored twice more to take the 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
In the third period, St. Louis scored its second power play goal of the night at 7:11 to make it 4-1.
Despite the score, brutality carried late into the game as Ryan Reaves was issued a roughing minor and 10-minute misconduct with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Rick Nash, who was involved with extra-curricular activity throughout the night, was in the midst of the altercation.
The teams will undoubtedly carry their discrepancies into tomorrow night’s game in Nationwide Arena.
